Synchro Take Class Win at Spa Francorchamps
Synchro Motorsport claim ‘first in class’ at Creventic’s 12H Spa, securing them second place in the A3 Class Championship.
The Honda of the UK Manufacturing voluntary race team got back to winning ways last weekend in Belgium after enduring a season filled with challenges. Factory driver Alyn James was joined by Synchro regular, Dan Wheeler, and triple BTCC champion Matt Neal from Honda’s Team Dynamics.
Having never driven the famous Belgian circuit, Alyn James drove Matt Neal around the track in a HUM-built road-going Type R to discuss the best racing lines to take and areas where the Honda would outperform its competitors.
After finding the perfect set-up during the Free Practice sessions, Alyn James set the team’s fastest lap in Qualifying, navigating the 7.04KM track in 2:45.699. This placed the team third in class ahead of the 12-hour race.
The final race of the Creventic Series got underway at 09.50am in unseasonable sunshine and rising temperatures that peaked at 23 degrees during the race. The Civic Type R FK2 took full advantage of the good track conditions and moved from third to first in class within the opening two laps.
The reliability of the multi-championship winning FK2 shone through, with Synchro Motorsport only having to stop for scheduled tyre changes and refuelling. Well-coordinated pit stops from the Synchro mechanics and consistent lap times from all three drivers, allowed the Type R to extend the gap between the chasing pack.
As the sun was setting, Matt Neal tagged in Alyn James for the final stint of the race. The Powertrain and Durability Manager took the chequered flag under the moonlight to claim the fastest lap of the race and Synchro’s first 24H Series race win of the season.
The 27 points awarded for the race win, resulted in Synchro Motorsport securing second place overall in the 2018 A3 Class Championship and second place in the A3 Drivers Championship.
Synchro will turn their focus towards the final Britcar round of the season at Brands Hatch on Saturday 17 November 2018.
